Jack the Ripper is an alias given to an unidentified serial killer in the impoverished Whitechapel area of London England in the fall of 1888. The name is taken from a letter sent to the Central News Agency by someone claiming to be the murderer. He stalked prostitutes in the late night hours in public or semi-public places, first strangling and then mutilating them. Police believed that he may have had anatomical or surgical knowledge because he was known to remove his victims' organs.
